DPAS LIVE REVIEW

Le Zenith, Paris, France
29th June 2003

Well, first of all, I've made 300 km to see Deep Purple again with my wife and friends, and I have to say that under the Zenith, it was hot (aroud 36° C !!!), and people were hot too! I think that many of them were there to see Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The lead singer told the audience that this was the last time that they would come to France so many times that I was wondering why they came in the first place? I hope there are no political reasons for it.... but it was a good show indeed.

Now, Deep Purple: they came on at 21h00, and went off at 22h25 !!!!!!!!! Well, I love Deep Purple, but the ticket was expensive, and the trip to Paris too, for sure, and I'm a bit disappointed....and the set list was the same as the days before (nothing from Purpendicular or Abandon !!).

The sound was not so good, much too loud. Actually, Steve Morse was really too loud, when he was playing 'hot' you couldn't hear anything from Don Airey or Ian Paice (!!!). I love him, but last night he was too dominating in the mix.

When he was playing gently, we could hear Ian Gillan’s voice : I’ve never heard him in such good voice : he’s getting younger !! It was Ian Paice's birthday, during Don Airey's to Lazy, he threw in "Happy Birthday!"....which got a laugh from Paice!

I was pleased to hear Knocking At Your Back Door, it worked well. Lazy was slower than in previous years, and it was a real delight. I was unable to appreciate the two new songs (Haunted and I've Got Your Number) -because of the bad sound, I think the last one worked well - great drums - but I will have to wait for the new album...

Don Airey did a wonderful job, he's in the right place here. In his solo before Perfect Strangers we had some Mozart (La Marche Turque), Star Wars, and "La Marseillaise". The audience loved him. Perfect Strangers was really… well, perfect !! On Space Truckin', we had an all too short solo from Ian Paice, mind you, he was terrific all the evening, super-human!

Hush was good, with a little jam thrown in, and the crowd went crazy for Black Night. Finally, I have to say that the show was great but really too short. This was the 5th time I've seen Deep Purple on stage in the last 7 years, and I don't know if I would travel 300 km again to see them playing only 80 minutes! (Though I probably would!)

Please Steve, you are such a good guitar player, don't be so loud!! Il va falloir attendre encore quelques semaines avant de pouvoir poser une oreille sur le nouvel album! Wait and see!
