Raised In Captivity *10.07.11* |
|
Steve Morse appears on the track "Lost For Words" from Asia bassist / vocalist John Wetton's new solo album "Raised In Captivity" on the Frontiers Records label. The track is, unsurprisingly, rather Asia-like. Other guest musicians on the album include Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett, Tony Kaye, Geoff Downes, and Eddie Jobson.

Solo albums on Metal Mind *28.12.10* |
|
The Metal Mind label are planning to re-release Steve Morse's last three pre-Deep Purple solo albums. "High Tension Wires" from 1989 was recorded with his old Dixie Dregs band mates, and includes a version of the Dregs' "Leprechaun Promenade". It is generally considered to be his best solo album.
'Southern Steel' was released in 1991 following Steve's sabbatical from the music industry. It features a guest appearance from guitarist Jeff Watson, recorded before he teamed up with Joe Lynn Turner and Bob Daisley in Mother's Army. "Coast to Coast" from 1992 was Steve's current solo release when he was asked to replace Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple.
None of the re-releases seem to include any bonus tracks.

Angelfire with Sarah Spencer *updated 6.09.10* |
|
The Steve Morse / Sarah Spencer album Angelfire, first mooted back in
2007, is finally to be released in August 2010 on Radiant Records in
America as an 11 track CD. It also features Steve Morse Band guys Van Romaine on
drums / percussion and Dave La Rue on bass. "It's kind of acoustic
stuff. I knew her parents and they said, "You've got to hear my
daughter". I heard her, and she was really pretty good. So I listened
to more stuff, and I said bring her over and let's see if we can write
something together. We did, and that first take, just nailed it."
The album is very laid back, and quite pleasant, with an acoustic
feel. No real showing off, the emphasis is on Sarah's vocals. It is available now from dpas online. Angelfire (also the band name) have also opened for the Steve Morse
Band in USA - Steve Morse (guitars), Sarah Spencer (vocals) and Bill
Evans (keyboards, bass).

Out Standing In Their Field *29.10.09* |
|
Steve Morse's new album is finally issued in Europe, titled Out
Standing In Their Field (and if you thought that was an iffy pun, try
track 10, Baroque 'n Dreams!). 15 tracks of high energy guitar mayhem
and wizardry as only SM knows how, with band mates bassist Dave Larue
and drummer Van Romaine in support. Nice cover too.

Busman's holiday *updated 30.09.09* |
|
The Steve Morse Band are doing sixteen shows in America, starting on 15th October 2009 in Annapolis, and rounding off on 31st October in Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, Georgia.
In addition Steve is doing a guitar clinic during the upcoming tour, on 24th October. 2009 at Cheney Hall, 177 Hartford Road, Manchester, CT.
Questioned recently about why he doesn't tour his band in the UK, something we get asked a lot, Steve replied that the problem is timing. UK promoters / venues require a longer lead in time to book shows, and his DP schedule doesn't give him enough flexibility at the moment.

We Wish You A Metal Xmas *updated 21.01.09* |
|
You read about it first in Grollywood, now Stuart Hamilton presents the full surreal lowdown on Steve's involvement in a heavy rock Christmas album.
"Bob Kulick and Brett Chassen have just finished the mastering of "We Wish You A Metal Christmas and a
Headbanging New Year"! Recorded in the 101-degree Van Nuys, California sunshine this summer,
with some help from their friends, it will be released in the U.S. on October 14 via
Amoury Records and Black Ion Music. The album is a line-up of hard rock and heavy
metal's finest giving their own unique twist to Christmas classics old
and new. This is definitely not an album for the faint-hearted." (Oh, I don't know... what about Anthrax's involvement on 'Silent Night' ?).
Deep Purple family involvement includes Tony Iommi, Ronnie Dio, Rudy Sarzo (ex Whitesnake) and SImon Wright (now of Big Noize) souping up 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', Steve Morse getting stuck into "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" aided by ex Whitesnake bassist Marco Mendoza (amongst others), and, finally, JLT heading up a stomp through "Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree". (Enough already, who let this one escape from Grollywood?...)

Moving Cruise Control DVD *updated 30.07.08* |
|
The Cruise Control DVD is moving from the T2 label (their edition is now deleted - though dpas online does have a few copies left in stock) to Edel Records. The sales sheets (which give an August release) are confusing and imply that the two shows on the previous edition (New York and Connecticut) are being split across two separate DVDs, while Steve and the label's websites don't mention it at all. The audio is to be included as a bonus CD. .
It has now been confirmed that the reissues of the Cruise Control DVD have the same video content as previous releases. There are two new editions, each has the same DVD plus ONE of the shows on CD. They are now available to order at the DPAS Online Store. Our thanks to Hans Peter Jenssen for clearing this up!

Dregs Reissues *28.08.07* |
|
Steve Morse's three early eighties Arista albums DREGS OF THE EARTH,
UNSUNG HEROES and INDUSTRY STANDARD are back out in Europe on a
double CD set called Dregs. This is the first time they've been
available in full for ages. Despite an awful cover, it's a good way
to pick up what were ground breaking jazz rock fusion albums, as well
as discovering Steve's early career. They will be reviewed in Issue
59.
Available now at dpas online.

Power Lines DVD *26.08.07* |
|
Steve Morse has just made his 1989 "Power Lines" instructional video available on DVD via the Alfred Publishing company in America. The 60-minute disc's description reads as follows: "Learn Steve's warm-up exercises, how to add chromatic ideas to your playing, 3-note-per-string scales, sequences and arpeggios. Steve also reveals his unique method for playing polyphonic scales and melody lines. Up-close shots and graphics enable you to learn note-for-note some of Steve's favorite licks."
Steve's other two instructional videos - 1991's "The Complete Styles Of..", and "The Essential.." are already available on DVD, and were also compiled into a 'best of..' called 'Highlights'. (see DPAS review) MA#90211 |
